North Bend State Park hosting wild foods event Sept. 15-17
CAIRO, W.Va. — North Bend State Park’s Nature Wonder Weekend, North America’s premier and longest-running wild foods event, will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sept. 15-17, 2017, with a special celebration of renowned natural foods advocate Euell Gibbons.
Gibbons was the inspiration for and inaugural speaker at the Nature Wonder Weekend 50 years ago. Although he died in 1975, Gibbons’ return appearance for this year’s anniversary celebration is made possible by scholar Doug Wood of Hurricane. Wood will appear as Euell Gibbons on the evening of Friday, Sept. 15.
“For those who wonder how Nature Wonder Weekend came to be 50 years ago, why its home is North Bend State Park and how Euell Gibbons became involved, we will revisit the history of this special event during this special anniversary,” said Edelene Wood, President of the National Wild Foods Association.
Wild food foragers from across the country attend the Nature Wonder Weekend every year. Reservations are available for this annual gathering. Guest speakers include author and teacher Mike Krebill of Iowa, and foraging instructor Sam Thayer of Forager’s Harvest in Wisconsin. The theme for this year’s event is “It Wonders Me.”
Events begin Friday evening and conclude Sunday midmorning, and include speakers, presentations, nature walks and collection and preparation of wild foods. Activities include a park tour, wild food identification instruction, a bird walk, the Hazel Wood Commemorative Wild Food Cooking Contest and the Bill Faust Wild Cake Contest. The Wild Drink Contest winner is awarded the honorary Maxine Scarbro Friendship Cup.
Overnight lodging packages as well as day-only attendance and meal options are available. Guests may reserve lodge rooms, cabins or camping sites. The weekend meal package includes five traditional Appalachian-style buffet meals provided by North Bend Lodge Restaurant.
