Run for the River Triathlon returning to Tornado

The Coal River Group has announced it will host the third annual Run for the River Triathlon at Meadowood Park in Tornado on Saturday, April 15.

“Meadowood Park in Tornado will be the starting point for an 18-mile triathlon race this spring,” said Bill Currey, chairman of the Coal River Group. “The race includes a combination of paddle, bike and run challenges.”

The Tri-State Racer organization will manage the event and make all reservations. Attendees can go to the company’s website at to obtain full details for the race and to register.

The course will include a three-mile cross country run in Meadowood Park with some gentle slopes: an eight-mile bike ride from the park along Coal River Road to the Alum Creek Lions Club Nature Conservancy at Lock 4, return to the park with a seven-mile paddle down Coal River with a short, .25-mile run to the finish line at the CRG River Center.

The CRG will be teaming up with the Alum Creek Lions Club to ensure that the bike and river race segments, which use public roads and the new Lions Club Lock 4 river front conservation preserve, provide participants with a safe course for the race.

Additional support will be provided by CRG volunteers along with Lincoln and Kanawha county sheriff departments and the local volunteer fire department for the event.

“The event expands the groups variety of river-based recreational activities,” Currey said. “We want to bring life back to the rivers and this event is one more way to encourage visitors to see and enjoy the many recreational assets we offer throughout the Coal River Watershed.”

Funds raised from the event support the many river clean-up and restoration projects the Coal River Group has championed for more than 12 years.

Entry fees will be: individual: $45, and teams, $35 per team member. Awards will be included for all race classification groups.

The Coal River Group has space available at the River Center grounds for vendors and sponsors.
